About “The town and the city”
The Town and the City is a novel by Jack Kerouac, published by Harcourt Brace in 1950. It was Kerouac's first major work, written before he developed his signature "spontaneous prose" style. The novel is loosely based on his life and includes elements of his early experiences. It follows a character named Peter Martin, who comes from the small town of Galloway, Massachusetts—based on Kerouac's hometown of Lowell. The story also features the Beat Generation circle in New York during the late 1940s. Several real-life Beat figures are represented in the novel, including Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Lucien Carr. A character modeled after David Kammerer dies in the novel, mirroring the real-life event in which Kammerer was killed by Carr. The novel reflects Kerouac's early literary influences, particularly Thomas Wolfe.
