Arabella Tallant, the eldest daughter of a penniless country clergyman, travels to London to attend her first season, hoping to secure a wealthy husband, and becomes entangled with Robert Beaumaris, a wealthy and socially prominent bachelor. After falsely claiming to be an heiress, Arabella is drawn into high society and faces various social challenges, while her interactions with Beaumaris evolve into a complex dynamic that includes her rescuing a mistreated chimney sweep and a mixed-breed mongrel, which ultimately leads to her brother Bertram Tallant becoming involved in the unfolding events.
