In 18th-Century England, Philip Jettan, a provincial squire, attempts to win the hand of Cleone Charteris, a woman of great beauty and charm, in a romantic pursuit that leads him to seek refinement in Paris. Upon returning with the manners and appearance of a fashionable man of the world, Philip finds that Cleone now faces competition from other suitors, and her feelings toward him are complicated by her initial reservations about his character.
