About “Arden of Faversham”
The Lamentable and True Tragedie of M. Arden of Feversham is an Elizabethan play registered on 3 April 1592 and printed later that year by Edward White. It is based on the real murder of Thomas Arden by his wife, Alice Arden, and her lover. The play shows how the couple planned and carried out the murder, as well as how they were discovered and punished. It is considered one of the earliest surviving examples of domestic tragedy, a type of Renaissance drama that focused on recent and local crimes instead of historical events.
