About “Ur-Hamlet”
The Ur-Hamlet is a play by an unknown author, with scholars suggesting either Thomas Kyd or William Shakespeare as the possible writer. It was dated to the late 1580s and staged in London, specifically at The Theatre in Shoreditch, as recalled by the Elizabethan author Thomas Lodge. No surviving copies of the play exist. The play features a character named Hamlet and a ghost who, according to Lodge's 1596 work Wits Misery and the Worlds Madnesse, shouts "Hamlet, revenge!"
