About “As We May Think”
An essay by Vannevar Bush, first published in The Atlantic Monthly in July 1945, and republished again as an abridged version in September 1945—before and after the U.S. nuclear attacks on Japan. Bush expressed concern that scientific efforts were being directed toward destruction rather than understanding. He proposed the concept of the memex, a collective memory machine designed to make knowledge more accessible. Bush believed the memex could transform an information explosion into a knowledge explosion. The essay is considered an influential 1945 work that anticipated the development of the information society.
