This 2001 German novel by W. G. Sebald follows Jacques Austerlitz, who arrives in England on a Kindertransport in 1939 as a small child and is raised by a Welsh Methodist minister and his wife who tell him nothing of his real family. As an older man, fleeting memories return, and he follows their trail back to the world he left half a century before, confronting the void at the heart of twentieth-century Europe to rescue his heritage from oblivion.
