About “Die Ausgewanderten”
The Road to Exile is a 1992 novel by W. G. Sebald that follows the lives of four men who are forced into exile. One is a teacher who was fired by the Nazis due to having a Jewish ancestor and later served in the German army. The other three are Jews. One is a surgeon who takes his own life because he cannot adjust to life in Britain. Another is an artist, and the third works as a butler in New York. The novel explores the personal and emotional struggles of these men as they navigate displacement and loss.
