Young Bealby resists being a servant and protests against his mother's plans, but ultimately accepts his role and is sent to Shonts, a large country house, to work as a steward's boy. His time there is marked by the arrival of a group of guests, including the eccentric Lord Chancellor, whose presence profoundly affects him.
