About “Between the World and Me”
Between the World and Me is a 2015 nonfiction book written by Ta-Nehisi Coates. It is structured as a letter to his teenage son, addressing the experiences of being Black in the United States. Coates reflects on American history and the deep-rooted racist violence within the country's culture. He draws from his own experiences in Baltimore, discussing how institutions such as schools and the police, as well as the streets, pose dangers to Black people. The book is inspired by James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time but presents a more pessimistic view of white supremacy, seeing it as an unchangeable force. Toni Morrison praised Coates for filling an intellectual gap left by Baldwin. The book received critical acclaim and won the 2015 National Book Award for Nonfiction. It was also a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction.
