About “Bitter lemons”

Lawrence Durrell's Bitter Lemons is an autobiographical account of his time on the island of Cyprus. After gaining fame with Justine, Durrell turned his attention to real-life experiences, writing in poetic prose about his life on the island. He arrived as a visitor, later becoming a householder, teacher, and Press Advisor to a government facing revolution. His deep understanding of Cypriot culture and fluent Greek helped him integrate into a village where he was warmly received. The book includes vivid descriptions of the island's landscapes, villages, and daily life, as well as humorous stories about buying a house and teaching English. Durrell also details the political tensions that led to a revolution, and his efforts to mediate between the Cypriots and the British. Ultimately, he resigned from his position and left the island.
