About “Book of Shadows”

A Book of Shadows is a collection of religious texts and instructions for magical rituals used in the Neopagan religion of Wicca. It was first created by Gerald Gardner, an English Wiccan, in the late 1940s or early 1950s. He used it in his Bricket Wood coven and later in other covens he established. The concept spread to other Wiccan traditions, such as Alexandrian Wicca and Mohsianism. With the rise of books teaching non-initiatory Wicca in the 1970s, the idea of the Book of Shadows became more widespread among solitary practitioners who were not part of traditional initiatory groups.
