About “Child 44”
Leo is a loyal MGB officer who follows the Party Line without question. He arrests people as ordered and ignores the suffering around him, believing the State's claim that no murder occurs in Communist Russia. His faith in the system is shaken when he witnesses an innocent man being tortured. He is then ordered to arrest his own wife, forcing him to confront the reality of the regime. He must choose between his wife and his life. The novel explores the moral conflict of a man caught between loyalty and conscience. The killing of children continues, highlighting the regime's brutality.
