Clavigo is a five-act tragedy written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1774. The play was written in eight days in May 1774 and published by July 1774. It is the first printed work to which Goethe added his own name. The lead role in the play was performed by Pierre Beaumarchais. Despite its significance, the play was received with disfavour.
