About “Code”
Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace by Lawrence Lessig explores the idea that cyberspace is entirely human-made and lacks natural laws. Everything in cyberspace is constructed through decisions made by people, and the code that powers the Internet both enables and restricts what users can do. This code is not neutral and is shaped by individuals and groups like the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), who are not elected and have no formal responsibility to the public. Lessig argues that the future of cyberspace will depend on who writes this code, and people should pay attention to who holds this power.
