Lady Panthea Vyne, the thirteen-year-old daughter of the Marquess of Staverly, enters into a secret marriage with Christian Drysdale, a Roundhead tax-collector, to save her brother Richard from execution. After being abducted by the highwayman Whitethroat, who reveals that Richard has been hanged, and following the duel in which Christian Drysdale is killed, Panthea is taken to safety, later reuniting with Whitethroat during the Restoration period when she is the Queen's favourite lady-in-waiting.
