Jerusha Abbott, an orphan from the John Grier Home, is sent to a northern college for women by an anonymous benefactor. In exchange, she must write to the man she calls Daddy-Long-Legs, updating him on her life. Now known as Judy, she embraces her new opportunities, reading widely, joining the basketball team, buying her first stockings, writing a novel, and winning a scholarship. She also forms close friendships and experiences love for the first time. The story is told through letters, making it an American epistolary novel.
