About “Deserto dei tartari”

The Tartar Steppe is a 1940 novel by Dino Buzzati. It follows young Giovanni Drogo, who is stationed at a remote fort overlooking the Tartar steppe. He initially plans to leave but becomes trapped in the routine of military life. As years pass, he joins the other soldiers in waiting for an invasion that never comes. The fort is eventually abandoned, and Giovanni's ambitions fade. The novel explores themes of duty, expectation, and the passage of time. It is often compared to Kafka's The Castle for its sense of existential waiting and isolation.
