About “Drei Abhandlungen zur Sexualtheorie”
The 1905 work Three Essays on Sexuality by Sigmund Freud does not mention the Oedipus complex in its first edition. This challenges the common belief that the Oedipus complex was central to Freud's early theory. The original text presents a form of psychoanalysis that is not based on the Oedipus complex. It suggests that Freud's approach originally aimed to question common beliefs about sexuality rather than support them. From 1909 onward, psychoanalysis became more aligned with these traditional views. The 1905 version offers a different perspective, one that could lead to a non-Oedipal form of psychoanalysis. This version shows that Freud's ideas did not necessarily depend on the Oedipus complex. It provides a foundation for rethinking psychoanalysis beyond the Oedipus framework.
