About “Duineser Elegien”
A 1923 cycle of ten elegies by Rainer Maria Rilke, begun in 1912 as a guest of Princess Marie von Thurn und Taxis at Duino Castle. Interrupted for years by depression related to World War I and military conscription, Rilke completed the cycle in a burst of writing in February 1922 at Château de Muzot in Switzerland; it was soon recognized as his most important work. Praise for “Duineser Elegien”

“Stephen Mitchell’s translations are masterful re-creations of the original, giving both precise renderings of Rilke’s language and sensitive interpretations of his poetic intent.”
“An undisputed masterpiece by one of the greatest modern poets, translated here by a master of translation.”
