The story is set in London during a card party hosted by a social-climbing hostess, where a double murder occurs during a game of Duplicate Bridge. Both victims are strangled with picture wire in identical fashion, prompting Inspector Hemingway to investigate the connection between a mysterious man of the world and an ambitious widow, while Miss Beulah Birtley becomes a prime suspect due to her recent purchase of the weapon, public expressions of hatred toward one victim, and being the last person seen with him alive.
