About “East of Eden”

East of Eden is a 1952 novel by John Steinbeck. The story is set in the Salinas Valley in the early twentieth century and follows three generations of two families, the Trasks and the Hamiltons, as they deal with themes of good and evil. Steinbeck described the novel as part allegory, part autobiography, and part epic. It was intended as a gift for his sons, exploring themes of identity, grief, and humanity. The novel draws on biblical themes, particularly the story of Cain and Abel. It helped establish the Salinas Valley as a significant place, often referred to as "the valley of the world." The book has remained popular for generations.
