About “England, England”

England, England is a 1998 novel by Julian Barnes that uses satire to explore themes like nationhood and authenticity. The story follows Sir Jack Pitman, a wealthy and eccentric businessman who builds a massive replica of England on the Isle of Wight, calling it "The Project." This artificial England includes famous landmarks and cultural symbols, such as Big Ben, Stonehenge, and the white Cliffs of Dover. The project becomes wildly successful and starts to overshadow the real England. The novel questions the nature of reality, art, and national identity through its exaggerated and humorous portrayal of a world where the copy becomes more real than the original.
