The Sense of an Ending is a 2011 novel by British author Julian Barnes. It is his eleventh novel written under his own name and was published in the United Kingdom on 4 August 2011. The story is told from the perspective of Tony Webster, a retired man who reflects on his past. He recalls meeting Adrian Finn at school and forming a close friendship. As time passes, Tony considers the choices he and his friends have made. The novel won the Booker Prize in October 2011 and was also nominated for the Costa Book Awards in the following month.
