Sue Trinder is an orphan raised by Mrs. Sucksby, a baby farmer who treated her with unusual kindness. Mrs. Sucksby's home also serves as a base for a group of petty thieves. One day, Gentleman, a skilled con man, offers Sue a chance to help him seduce Maud Lilly, a naive woman, in exchange for her inheritance. Sue agrees, hoping to repay her adoptive family.
