About “Tipping the Velvet”
Nan King, an oyster girl, becomes fascinated by Kitty Butler, a male impersonator performing in Canterbury. Through a friend, she attends all of Kitty's shows and eventually meets her. Nan becomes Kitty's dresser, and the two move to Leicester Square to start a career as a music-hall act. They perform together as an all-singing and dancing double act. Meanwhile, they also develop a romantic relationship and begin an affair. The story is part of a 1998 novel by Sarah Waters.
