Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a Gothic novel published in 1818 by English author Mary Shelley. The story follows Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a sentient creature through an unconventional experiment. Shelley began writing the novel at age 18 while staying in Bath. The first edition was published anonymously in London on 1 January 1818, when she was 20 years old. Her name first appeared on a French translation released in Paris in 1821.
