About “Fugitive Pieces”

Anne Michaels's debut novel interweaves the stories of three men from different generations, all shaped by the same war. At the center is Jakob Beer, a poet who was orphaned as a boy during World War II and rescued by Athos Roussos, a humanist and scholar. After the war, Jakob moves to Toronto with Athos, where he grapples with his traumatic past and the mystery of his sister's fate. He also meets the woman who becomes his first wife and begins his career as a translator and poet. Through his work, Jakob discovers the power of language to both destroy and restore. Later in life, he meets Ben, a young professor who is drawn to Jakob's writing and the quiet strength he exudes. Ben's own connection to the war's legacy deepens his fascination with Jakob, leading to a meaningful exchange that reopens parts of himself long suppressed. The novel explores how language and memory shape identity and healing.
