When Irene Gersh asks PI Kinsey Millhone to locate her elderly mother Agnes, who has not been heard from in six months, Kinsey takes the case despite her reservations. After finding Agnes in a hospital and later discovering her death from an apparent homicide, Kinsey uncovers that Agnes may have been trying to communicate something important before her death, prompting her to investigate further while evading threats from a criminal seeking revenge.
