About “Ghashiram Kotwal”
Ghashiram Kotwal is a Marathi play written by Vijay Tendulkar in 1972. It was created in response to the rise of a local political party in Maharashtra. The play is a political satire presented as a historical drama, based on the life of Nana Phadnavis and Ghashiram Kotwal, who were influential figures in the Peshwa court of Pune. The story explores how those in power create and abandon ideologies to suit their needs. The play was translated into English by Jayant Karve and Eleanor Zelliot. It was first performed on 16 December 1972 by the Progressive Dramatic Association in Pune. A 1973 production by Jabbar Patel is regarded as a classic in Modern Indian Theatre.
