About “Guillaume de Dole”
Guillaume de Dole is an Old French narrative romance written by Jean Renart in the early 13th century. The poem consists of 5,656 lines and is known for including forty-six chansons, or songs. It is the first known example of a French literary work that combines narrative with lyric poetry. The story features an active female character, which was unusual for its time. Its structure influenced other writers, including Gerbert de Montreuil, and by the end of the 13th century, it had become a standard text in French literature.
