About “Half a life”

Half a Life is a 2001 novel by V. S. Naipaul that follows the life of Willie Chandran. His father abandoned his brahmin heritage to marry a woman of low caste, an act that led to a troubled family life. As an adult, Willie leaves India for London, where he attempts to create a new identity among immigrants and artists. He struggles with self-doubt through sexual experiences and efforts to become a writer, becoming exhausted in the process. A woman helps him recover, and he joins her in her home in Africa, where he lives during the final years of colonialism. Naipaul explores themes of identity and inheritance across three continents, revealing the challenges of living a life not one's own. The novel reflects on the persistence of life despite personal struggles.
