The author of this work was deceived by a ridiculous illusion from the day he wrote the first page until he finally wrote the word "FIN" at the end of the last volume. He believed that a four-volume composition was worth thinking about, and spent his time searching for a central idea, developing it well or poorly in a good or bad plan, arranging scenes, combining effects, and studying manners as best he could. In short, he took his work seriously.
