Victor-Marie Hugo (1802-1885) was a French poet, playwright, novelist, essayist, visual artist, statesman, and human rights activist, an exponent of French Romanticism. Known abroad chiefly for the novels Les Miserables and Notre-Dame de Paris, in France his fame rests first on his poetry, including Les Contemplations and La Legende des siecles. He grew more liberal over time, becoming a passionate supporter of republicanism, and is buried in the Pantheon.
