About “His Master's Voice”

His Master's Voice is a 1968 novel by Stanisław Lem. It is told through the perspective of Peter Hogarth, an eminent mathematician who admits to possessing traits like cowardice, malice, and pride. Hogarth is conscripted into the secret Master's Voice project, a group of scientists on an isolated desert base trying to interpret an extraterrestrial message sent via neutrino emissions. Despite early progress, the scientists fail to fully understand the message. Hogarth becomes involved in conflicts between research groups and the growing influence of the Pentagon. He also learns of secret research into a potential side effect of the project, which could lead to a powerful weapon. The novel critiques Cold War politics, the relationship between science and military power, and the difficulty of understanding an alien message. It questions whether humanity could ever truly comprehend a message from a completely different civilization.
