About “Huis Clos”
No Exit is a 1944 existentialist French play by Jean-Paul Sartre, first performed at the Theatre du Vieux-Colombier in May 1944. It depicts an afterlife in which three deceased characters are locked into a room together for eternity as punishment. It is the source of Sartre's famous phrase "L'enfer, c'est les autres" ("Hell is other people"), tied to his ideas about the look and the ontological struggle of being seen as an object by another consciousness.
