Eve North returns to Athmore after a three-year separation from her husband Justin and discovers the estate and her husband have changed, while she herself has gained new understanding of her past mistakes. She becomes entangled in a dangerous situation involving her husband's brother Marc, the threat of divorce to marry Alicia Daven, and a mysterious warning from the deceased Daniel about the black rook's play, as the topiary garden of green-black yew trees forms a chessboard of life and death.
