About “In Evil Hour”

In In Evil Hour, a nameless Colombian village is shaken by the appearance of satirical posters that reveal the townspeople's hidden secrets. Some view the posters as gossip, but when a man kills his wife's lover after reading one, the mayor imposes martial law. He sends armed soldiers to patrol the streets and uses the situation to target political opponents. The novel takes place in a region that has recently been "pacified" after a civil war, with conservatives now in power and hunting liberals. The story begins as a priest prepares for mass, but a gunshot interrupts the day. The posters, which expose private affairs rather than political issues, spark underlying violence. The events unfold in a hot, heavy atmosphere, leading to a series of unforgettable scenes. The novel was written by Gabriel García Márquez in 1962.
