Gabriel García Márquez was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter, and journalist. He was affectionately known as "Gabo" throughout Latin America and considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982. García Márquez left law school to pursue a career in journalism and showed early political criticism. He married Mercedes Barcha in 1958; they had two sons, Rodrigo and Gonzalo. He began his career as a journalist and wrote acclaimed non-fiction and short stories. He is best known for his novels, including One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) and Love in the Time of Cholera (1985). His works popularized magical realism and often featured the fictional village of Macondo, with themes of solitude. He died in 2014.
