About “Invitation to the Castle”
Invitation to the Castle is a 1947 satirical play by French playwright Jean Anouilh. It follows two brothers, Horace and Frédéric. Horace is a cold, manipulative playboy, while Frédéric is a sensitive man deeply in love with Diana, the spoiled daughter of a self-made millionaire. Diana, however, is drawn to Horace because of his emotional distance. To prove to Frédéric that Diana is not worthy of his love, Horace invites Isabelle, a lower-class dancer, to a ball and transforms her into an aristocratic figure, much like the Pygmalion myth. The play explores themes of love, manipulation, and social class. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
