About “Islands in the Stream”

Islands in the Stream (1970) is a posthumously published novel by Ernest Hemingway. It was begun in 1950 and largely completed by 1951, intended to restore Hemingway’s reputation after the poor reception of Across the River and Into the Trees. The novel was discovered among 332 works left by Hemingway upon his death. It was structured to include three stories showing different phases of the life of its main character, Thomas Hudson. Originally titled The Sea When Young, The Sea When Absent, and The Sea in Being, the sections were later renamed Bimini, Cuba, and At Sea. The book was adapted into a film in 1977.
