Set somewhere in the north of England, the novel follows Jane's childhood at Gateshead Hall, where she is abused by her aunt and cousins; her education at Lowood School; her time as governess at Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with her employer Edward Rochester; and her time with the Rivers family, whose cousin St John Rivers proposes to her. An 1847 novel by Charlotte Brontë.
