About “Shirley”

Shirley, published in 1849, is Charlotte Brontë’s second novel, written under the pseudonym “Currer Bell.” It is told in the third person with an omniscient narrator, unlike Jane Eyre, which is written in the first person. The novel explores themes of industrial change and the struggles of unemployed workers. It also emphasizes the importance of women’s intellect and their right to independent thought and action. Set in the West Riding of Yorkshire during the Napoleonic period, the story follows textile manufacturers and workers protesting the use of mechanical looms. Key characters include Robert Moore, a mill-owner facing opposition; Caroline Helstone, his cousin who loves him; and Shirley Keeldar, a wealthy and independent woman who moves to the area. Shirley helps Robert financially, and her growing interest in him causes emotional distress for Caroline. Shirley Keeldar is a strong and independent female character, unusual for the time. The name “Shirley” was originally mostly male, but the novel helped change its usage to a female name. While Shirley is less popular than Jane Eyre, it is now highly regarded by critics.
