About “Jin Ping Mei”

Jin Ping Mei is a Chinese novel of manners written in vernacular Chinese during the late 16th century in the Ming dynasty. It consists of 100 chapters and was published under the pseudonym Lanling Xiaoxiao Sheng. The author is believed to have come from Lanling County in present-day Shandong. The novel was circulated in manuscript form as early as 1596 and may have been revised before its first printed edition in 1610. A widely read version was edited and published by Zhang Zhupo in 1695, with some passages deleted or rewritten to clarify the author's intentions. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
