About “Kipps”

A novel by H. G. Wells follows an orphan who becomes apprenticed to a draper. The story is partly based on the author's own experiences as a young man. The protagonist, Kipps, grows bored with his routine life and work in the drapers. His life changes when he inherits a fortune from a previously unknown relative. After gaining wealth, Kipps tries to fit into upper class society, but faces difficulties as he attempts to imitate the people he meets. The novel explores his struggles with social mobility and personal identity.
