About “Lúdas Matyi”

Mattie the Goose-boy, or Lúdas Matyi, is a Hungarian epic poem written by Mihály Fazekas in 1804 and first published in 1817. It is based on a folk-tale of unknown origin. While most film adaptations set the story in the early 19th century, clues in the poem suggest it may date back to the early 16th century. The poem's structure and themes resemble the Akkadian story Poor Man of Nippur, which dates to around 1500 BC. The title character, Lúdas Matyi, is a poor boy who faces hardship and injustice. The work is considered an important part of Hungarian literature. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
