La Russie en 1839 is an 1843 book by French author Astolphe de Custine, highly critical of Russian society, and banned there during the era of the Russian Empire. Because of this work, Custine was later dubbed by some historians 'the de Tocqueville of Russia,' and in it he described Russia as the 'prison of the peoples.'
