La Tosca is a five-act drama written by the 19th-century French playwright Victorien Sardou. It premiered on 24 November 1887 at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin in Paris, starring Sarah Bernhardt in the title role. Although it received negative reviews from Parisian critics on opening night, the play became one of Sardou's most successful works and was toured globally by Bernhardt after its debut. The original play fell out of the standard theatrical repertoire by the mid-1920s, but its operatic adaptation by Giacomo Puccini remains widely popular. The play has also been adapted into other forms, including two Japanese theatre versions, an English burlesque titled Tra-La-La Tosca, and several film adaptations.
