About “Leiden Aratea”
Leiden University Library, VLQ 79, also known as the Leiden Aratea, is an illuminated manuscript that contains an astronomical treatise by Germanicus, based on the Phaenomena of Aratus. The manuscript was created in the Lorraine region and dates to around 816. It was produced at the court of Louis the Pious, who reigned from 814 to 840. The Leiden Aratea is one of four Carolingian codices made in his court. The text was widely known in both the Middle East and Europe, as there are many translations and copies of it.
