A 1979 novel by Eileen Chang set during the Japanese occupation of China and Hong Kong. It follows Wong Chia Chi, a young student active in the resistance, and Mr. Yee, a political figure working for the Japanese occupational government, as they move between Shanghai's tea parties and secret interrogations and become drawn into mutual attraction.
